If you've been to Spessart in Bavaria, Germany, you might correctly guess that a lot of Spessartine is found there.
Spessartine crystalizes in hues of red and orange, ranging from dark crimsom red to an intense yellowish-orange. The yellow-orange variety comes from Madagascar. It is more correctly called Mandarin garnet.
Garnets, spessartine included, form with other minerals, such as granite.
There is another mineral crystal, spessartite, that has a similiar name, but is a whole different thing.
